The story behind the site
The Plume of Feathers is an independent family and local-history project exploring the people and stories of Portscatho through the memories of Warren Edwards Peters and the archive surrounding his life.Warren was born at the Plume of Feathers in 1922. His memories provide the main thread through this site — from childhood in Portscatho to wartime service and a lifetime in the Royal Navy.
A village of individual stories
The Plume of Feathers is where Warren’s story began, but the name also provides a fitting way to think about the history preserved here. A village is made from individual lives — each one a small part of a much larger story.Warren’s memories provide the main thread, but around him are the stories of his family, friends, neighbours, fishermen, boatbuilders and sailors who formed the Portscatho he knew.
About the archive
The photographs, documents and memories gathered here come primarily from Warren and Vera Peters’ family archive, alongside historic material relating to Portscatho and Warren’s life at sea.Warren’s own recollections are presented in his words wherever possible. His spelling, grammar and expressions have been retained as part of the historical record rather than rewritten into a modern voice.As the archive develops, additional historical sources may be used to provide context or clarify events. Where Warren’s memories and the documentary record differ, the intention is to preserve both rather than silently alter his account.
An evolving archive
This site is intended to grow as more photographs, documents and stories are identified. Warren’s story is the starting point, but over time the archive may expand to include more of the people, places, boats and events that shaped Portscatho and the lives connected with it.
